Russell Freedman begins with a lively account of his childhood, his career as a county lawyer, and his courtship and marriage to Mary Todd. Then it moves on to the presidential years (1861-1865), skillfully explaining the many complex issues he grappled with as he led a deeply divided nation through the Civil War. The author has a way of making history reader-friendly to the point that the reader doesn’t realize just how much history and information they have read until they’re done and are looking for more. Included in the end of the book is a section that lists some of his more well known quotes and their origins.
